History

Chrystie Street Ballet Academy (CSBA) was originally founded in 2006 by Founder/Director Melissa Marotto.  The mission:  to provide a professional ballet education to New York City youth that is both nurturing and accessible.  In 2017 we relocated from our original Chrystie Street location to the three dance studio locations we are at today.  We are proud to continue to serve the Downtown NYC community, and beyond!  Students have come to us from all 5 boroughs as well as Long Island and New Jersey!

Our Philosophy

At CSBA we believe that all students will benefit from the study of ballet, and that professional ballet training need not be for the select few.  We provide a solid foundation in ballet training that works for all ages, backgrounds, and levels of ability.  Each student is encouraged to meet his or her own potential, and each student is treated as an individual.

Our Teaching Methodology

Our dedicated teaching staff follows a structured syllabus that is systematically designed to develop a solid foundation in classical ballet technique from the Pre-Ballet level through Ballet 5.  Each level is a direct progression from the one preceding it, allowing students to develop at the appropriate rate for their age.  Technical emphasis is placed on proper alignment, placement, and correct posture.  Classical ballet vocabulary, musicality, and coordination are developed through age-appropriate exercises in the center, at the barre, and across the floor.  Discipline and classroom etiquette are also at the center of our pedagogy. Our classes inspire confidence, creativity, and an appreciation for the art form!
